Recap:
TALLADEGA, Ala. (Oct. 20, 2013) – Traveling to Talladega Superspeedway for the final restrictor plate race of the 2013 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season, Dakoda Armstrong and the No. 60 WinField team were prepped for the unpredictable racing that would unfold on Saturday afternoon. A previous winner at the 2.66-mile track, Armstrong carried an extra boost of confidence into the fred's 250 powered by Coca-Cola. Battling for the win coming out of the final turn, his hopes of visiting Victory Lane were dashed with a multi-truck incident on the frontstretch, handing him fifth place. The finish is the best of his NCWTS 2013 season thus far.

Armstrong's 14th-place qualifying effort on Friday afternoon was not reflective of how pleased the 22-year-old driver was with the handling of his WinField Silverado. Choosing to ride safely through the beginning and mid-portion of the 94-lap event, Armstrong took his chance to move forward after his final pit stop on Lap 67. Spotter Tyler Green helped Armstrong find the best moving line to push into the top-10 as the final caution of the day came out and set up a green-white-checkered finish.

Set up to restart from the eighth position as the field took the green for three laps to the finish, the No. 60 machine received a huge push from the No. 51 of Kyle Busch. The two trucks hooked together for the final circuits and joined two other tandems to race for the win. With a full head of steam battling for the lead to the checkers, a multi-truck incident wiped across the front of the field, collecting Armstrong and ending his hopes for the win. The WinField Silverado still crossed the line in the fifth position, giving the Indiana-native his best 2013 NCWTS finish to date.

Quotes:
"Our race was going really well up until the final few hundred feet," Armstrong explained. "I really had a great push from the 51 truck and I have to thank him for that. We had a really good shot and a big head of steam coming to the checkers before the accident. I know I am going to be bummed after watching the replay because we were so close to the win, but it really was a fun race and I'm proud of how well our WinField Silverado performed today."

Notes:

  • Saturday's fred's 250 was Armstrong’s second career start at Talladega Superspeedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
  • Pleased with the handling in the draft, the WinField team didn't focus as much on single-truck speed, qualifying 14th on Friday afternoon
  • Spotter Tyler Green kept Armstrong in contention by steering clear of several incidents before the final green-white-checkered restart
  • Battling for the lead with six trucks to the checkers, Armstrong was near the finish before a multi-truck incident wiped out his drafting partner and left him with a fifth-place finish and damage to the WinField Silverado.
